Who builds computers here as a hobby?
I just built myself a new test box:
Althon 1000+
Nvidia Geforce 2
Western Digital 20 gb (first hd)
Western Digital 10 gb (second hd)
300 watt power supply
PCI NIC card of some sorts that I found in the closet
very small case
What do you think? I just run OpenBSD in CLI with it, and it's perfect. Sure - it's the brim of technology for about 1996 but I love it. My main box is cool and all but I envy this test box I just built.Registered Linux user #393103

I've built all my desktop systems starting with a P-75 in 96.

For the longest while, I was able to put together a machine from old spare boxes I've obtained here and there. Time and parts ran out though, and just this year, I've had to purchase two brand new boxes from Dell.

The only computer I bought was an IBM .....486 - 50 Mhz ..270 Mbyte harddrive...4Mbyte RAM....1x CDrom.....etc...
Since then I built my own...can't remember the year.....but I start with AMD K-5 110Mhz CPU .....
Right now I'm using Abit ICX7-Max3 motherboard....P4-2.4Mhz CPU....1Gig RAM...5 Harddrives...etc.
I have a strange problem with my other motherboard...an Asus P4PE ....it keeps failing POST....telling me that I have overclocked the CPU...which I didn't ...

Forgot to mention that I have a Lite-On CD RW in there too.
I'm running low on hardware now that I have built this one, I might have to pick up an old Dell or two and take parts from it.
Interesting posts, guys.Registered Linux user #393103
- 07-15-2005 #6That sounds very similar to the first system my Dad bought for me a long time ago. It ran DOS like there was no tomorrow, but then Windows 95 slowed it down considerably.

1st desktop I built on my own was a Celeron 300 @ 509 Mhz, 128 Mb RAM, 10 G Hdd, some Nvidia graphics chip. Now it acts like my firewall router.
I continued building desktops until my current one which was built 3 years ago and is starting to show its age and I will build a new one sometime this year when I have enough money and those dual core chips come down in price.Life is complex, it has a real part and an imaginary part.

i want to but my mummy won't let me...
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

I always build my own but would never consider building them for other people.
