    I don't find it surprising at all -- I'd rather be surprised that avatars didn't win with more of a marginal.

    After all, the avatar serves the same purpose as icons do in a desktop environment. The human brain has a lot of acceleration functions for recognizing pictures and objects very quickly, so the brain would normally analyze and associate an avatar or icon subconciously before we even get a chance to so much as look at the account name.

    I would believe that most of us regard the account name as the authoritative way to identify a user (I know I do), but since the avatars are so much easier to recognize, I would be guessing that most people skip looking up the account name as a way to save time.

    Definitely the avatar. Although, the number of penquins can also be a factor.

    And by the way avatar is a hindi word meaning the incarnation of a hindu god in human or animal form.
