Project Looking Glass. Your thoughts?
Just wondering if anyone has seen the demo for Project Looking Glass, and what are your thoughts.
(I've never used Solaris because I really have not found a need to fill out all the information just to download it).
For me, it was the most incredible looking desktop
I have seen in a long time (beside the Mezzo desktop in Symphony OS).
I noticed that it will be made available for Linux. Do you think you would use it? I'll have to stick with looking at the demo if Sun requires all that info to be filled out before downloading it.

I won't be using it any time soon. I see it as mostly a "Gee whiz!" project focused more on what can be done with the desktop rather than what should be done with the desktop. Until some program I use comes out with a logical use for the 3D desktop space, it's really nothing more than a pretty resource hog to me.

All that except taking notes on the "back" of a window is just a waste of resources.
- 07-31-2005 #4I would have to agree with that.

Just looks too fancy to me. Sort of like Windows Vista.

I'd agree that currently it is a waste of resources, but the same could be said of most of the desktops we use. By the time this gets to a production stage we will have even more CPU cycles to spare andthis kind of thing may be near practical. I mean unless you're using a really barebones wm, you can argue that we're already wasting resources. I may never even use it, and it certainly will be something you won't want on your server but I'm glad to see someone pushing the boundaries a bit.
- 07-31-2005 #7True, but besides the waste in resources, I can't see a practical application for this yet. As I said, perhaps one day a program will come out that makes logical use of the 3D space and it might even be something I would like to use, but until then, I see this as a cute toy, nothing more.

I also agree with the sentiments of these post.
However we use many programs that are resource hogs all the time (Doom 3 anyone!). While I also may not use this desktop, it still looks pretty good.
For instance anyone ever watch the show "Pimp My Ride". What they do with those cars a amazing, but you also know that if something breaks the owner has to take the car back to them to be repaired, which will probably cost an arm and a leg. However I would still love to drive one of those babies for a week, just because it looks so darn good.
Alas, I will just stick to watching the show on t.v. because the contract (like Sun's if you want to use Solaris 10, too many questions) would just be too steep.

I think it looks pretty cool, but I suppose I don't quite understand what It Is. A desktop enviroment? A window manager?

Its very interesting, but not practical until video cards become more powerful (and the powerful ones become cheaper).
