Has anyone else tried elinks as a browser?
I was recommended to use this as a terminal based browser and it really seems cool. I'm basically curious if anybody else has had any experience with this because it's a change from firefox or konqueror. Takes some getting used to but it has that really ubergeek feel to it. lol. I know that you can get it from apt-get and outside of that, I don't know but it can't be that hard.

I've used lynx before, which is also a text-based browser.
Basically, use it when X is down. For that, it is extremely useful, since you can surf for guides and such.
But if you have X, just go for Firefox. Makes life much easier.
(if you're gonna be using commandline a lot, also grab pork, a text-based AIM/IRC client)DISTRO=Arch

lol. People always say something about an AIM/IRC bot whenever you talk about the internet and commandline. I don't get that but at the same time I do. And while on that subject, what's the best language to use for those? I've heard good things about C and also python.

I think elinks is just a modified version of links.

Most likely. But I like the feel of elinks more for some reason. I'm back on epiphany right now because someone wanted me to see something, but I like both for different reasons.

I've been using text browsers for a while now, and ELinks is one of my favorite. I also like w3m, which can actually support images if run in a terminal emulator in X11.
Text browsers are great if you don't want to use resource-hogging applications such X11 or Mozilla/Firefox. I've never had a text browser crash, but I have had every graphical web browser I've ever used crash on me. And you can't beat the fact that text browsers render pages much faster than graphical browsers.
It has a number of improvements though, and keep in mind, elinks is exclusively text-based. Advantages over links include the use of tabs, colors in text mode, and support for CSS and JavaScript. ELinks is also more highly maintained than the links project at the moment.

O.O this is 1337. I've been using lynx for reading long dark-on-light pages so it was light-on-dark but elinks is a lot better.

I was introduced to elinks last year while installing Gentoo for the first time. Before then I had used links, and lynks, but I like elinks much better. I do a lot of reading online and these browser's come in handy when I need pages to render quickly (some pages take a long time because their images.)
