Am I being Paranoid - MSN messenger downloads

    Hey guys,
I have been trying to download MSN messenger for a few weeks, someone asked me to see if I could run it under linux. Problem is I can't download it from the MSN site. I go through all the motions, and on clicking the manual download link it gets a 404 error. I have proved this works under Windows, and simultaneously downloaded from the same link firefox on my SuSE whil I skype a buddy that pulls it from XP. He gets it everytime and mine fails anytime.

Can you guys try it and see if it works? I'd like to know if this is something related only to my setup. I can't believe Microsoft's own IIS servers would be suffering.

msn messenger is not officially supported under linux. The code for the actual client is proprietary and protected. And it seems you need to be using Windows to download it from that link. You could download it from download.com if you really want the .exe file, but that would take more configuration than using a native client.
if you only want an msn client, I suggest trying amsn, which can be found here
    http://amsn.sourceforge.net/

Just download the Suse rpm for it and install. no problem

I knw, I use gaim and occasionally Kopete. I was asked to try and wine it out of interest. No linux support should hardly explain why I can't download it for window on my linux box.

sorry, I just edited my post, I reread your statement and guessed you had heard of those and such.. .

seems odd msn would block linux users from downloading it

yeah, after checking it seems any other source besides msn itself will allow you to download the msn messenger...
Msn seems to hold a grudge against us linux users

BigTom, I opened the link using Mozilla 1.7.11 and Firefox 1.0.6 in WinXP and I get a screen stating "Please wait while MSN Messenger downloads" but nothing happens . It only works when using Internet Explorer and ActiveX controls has to be activated to download the file.

Try a dislike for any browser other than Internet Explorer.
