linux demerits.....
Hi ,
let me frankly (but sadly) point out what i feel are the -ve points of linux compared to windows......
1.The time taken for booting the OS by linux is more than that by windows, shutdown time is almost the same.
2.Regarding installing the softwares, there are library dependencies
due to which we have to search for additional packages in the net..
3.Iam using FedoraCore3 .The inbuilt helix and totem players are good for nothing as i couldn't play the audio files mounted from the Win Fat32 partitions...
We need to download extra players like xmms,xine,etc...
Also we need to always give the command to play a file using Mplayer..
4.Driver problems.....ethernet,mouse,modem,etc.....
5.reports that it more vulnerable to threats than windows (reported by The Hindu, dated 22 Sept,2005).
I would like to still learn more about linux...but the above points are haunting me....
i 'd rather happy if there's someone to counter me....
Best wishes...........

Rather than torture yourself, just use whatever works best for you. That's what the rest of us are doing.

If this wasn't a forum filled with civilized people, I'd tell you something really mean. But I choose not to

You've probably been using Linux for a short amount of time, so I doubt you've absorbed the goodness of it.

which is easier to solve.

I should point out that points 2,3 and 4 will vary with distros and in my expereince SuSE and Xandros have pretty much the best hardware detection around. Media players can be a pain, but once you have downloaded respective codecs, it all works fine. Just like windows can't play dixX or xVID natively, you need 3rd party software to help you play those properly.
About point 5, I haven't seen that article, but if you obviously use root account for day to day things then you are probably just as vulnerable as a windows user running in admin mode.
About point 1, you can trim off some of the startup services so that it boots marginally faster, but overall there is pretty much nothing which can be done about the slow loadup times.
you could always try a different distro, e.g SuSE or Mandrake or Xandros. But like Ozar said, stick with what works best for you.Life is complex, it has a real part and an imaginary part.

Re: linux demerits.....
1. system-config-services
2. That's why there's yum, apt, portage and ports.
3. Do you really expect RedHat to pay for some stupid royalty fee for a codec that isn't even the best codec available?
4. Different software works with different hardware. Try another distro.
5. That's obviously bs.

still expecting more....
somewhat comforted now......
- 09-24-2005 #9I appreciate the fact that your attitude seems to indicate disapointment but not hostility - and that you really don't want your experience thus far to be the case - this is good! Hang in there!

You might find it worthwhile to investigate some other distros - there may be one that better lends itself to your purposes. If you are down-loading your linux off the net -- well, that can sometimes be a little tricky -- but, I also would whole-heartedly agree that anyone on the net offering a [single down-load Linux "system"] should certainly arrange it so as to eliminate the kind of library dependencies that you describe. That something is freedom - in the form of Open Source software. But you need to look deeper than just on the surface. I know this may be difficult for some - but I would like to suggest that you take a different approach - look at the over-all value of Linux/OpenSource on its own merit instead of comparing it to Windows.

And, of course, what Ozar said still applies.
