so i just ordered a copy of Debian sarge and Gentoo 2005.1 still debating which i should install though. so which is better?...

    Debian has god awful hardware detection. I fought for a week to get my printer and sound card working before giving up. Note that I tried 3 different sound cards and two different printers and I still could not get any of them to work. I've never tried Gentoo but it will probably be faster because it compiles programs from source. Not sure how the hardware detection is though.

    I had no problem with Debian on the two computers I installed it on...two computers that are really different.

    yes, it runs fine on my p2 (ati rage) my amd tb 1500+ (nvidia tnt), p4 18 (ati 9000) and my amd 64 (nvidia 6600GT) no problems...

    gentoo..want to hear how many times ye fail.

    yes "shardenfreud" is an apropriate word to use.

    Try both.

    I personally prefer Debian (and the hardware detection of the new installer is exellent).

    I'm obviously the only person here who doesn't like Debian. But, you should try both. It's a matter of personal experiance with Linux.
