Grettings Everyone!
Hello everyone,
Just wanted to introduce myself to see who's out there!
My name is Dan I just turned 27 years old and recently started using Linux. The distro I'm curently runing is Mandriva Linux. I have read of some people who don't really like Mandriva, I'm not sure why they don't, But thats because i still don't know whats good or bad on a Linux distro.
I have been interested in using and alternate OS to Windows for a long time now and linux was a the top of the list. Right now i'm quite dissapointed that windows is pretty much a set standard on PC's. (Why doesn't anything that Microsoft makes works??)
As for my still short experience with linux, all i can say is that it totally whoops a$$. I'm really looking forward to using it more for my daily tasks. I hope that can be acomplished as soon as i get a modem that works with linux thats pretty much whats limiting me right now to work more with linux.
Well thats it! Just bored ya there for a minute! Look forward to reading from some other linux fans out there!
Dan

Congratulations on making the switch, LinuxDan.
If you haven't already, you should start a topic about your modem not working in linux. How to know if you are a geek.

Re: Grettings Everyone!
Hi! Welcome to the forums!
This is a matter of personal opinion. Windows XP itself is a dream. I love it. Unfortunatly I don't like the activation scheme Microsoft has pinned to it. In my view this is the first step on a long road of Microsoft-led "trusted computing" revolutions. This is why I use Windows as little as possible.

This is the most common modem problem people run into: their modems weren't even engineered to support anything but Windows in the first place. I know SmartLink has some Linux drivers for their modems, but from what I hear they are relatively buggy.

Guys thanks all for the replies!
I'm pretty hooked with linux right now. As I mentioned before my modem is not recognized by linux. It is an AMR modem.. quite certain that will not work with linux. I think the easiest way is to buy a modem thats know to work with linux almost right of the bat. But there's no learning on that is there ; )?
So guys what modems out there work with linux in the least painful way?

I am pretty sure that most modems can be made to work with Linux.
And the ones that don't, they have software that can use the Windows drivers.
This site has some info you could look at.

Well guys its been a while since i posted here. I'm on the process of moving and haven't had much time to do some time on linux or my pc at all.
Just a comment here about modems. I recently walked into a store lookinf for an external modem to run on my linux setup. I was hoping to find something that stated that at least supported linux. In fact i found one Diamon external modem that supported Macs OSX. Well that brings the following question to mind. it seems so plausible but still have to ask. Since OSX is derrived from free BSD, I think that theres a real big chance this thinkg will almost work right of the bat? Or is OSX to alliniated from free BSD to actually make it work on linux?
You guys tell me...
