    do you have usb slots installed on your xbox (i do) if so, id take the xbox, if not, go with the laptop...

    Yeah, XBOX it is... That is if I cant find a PC for about 20 pounds, cos that is reasonable to play with for a few months.

    i would just image the laptop drive (ghost or whatever) so you have an exact copy so that when you're ready to give it back you just ghost it and it's identical to when you got it.

    Carve out a permanent partition on your dad's laptop for you, even a small one of a few 100 MB, and boot a live cd and make the partition your home directory (save your profile on a USB stick). Knoppix can do that easily; you just have to tell it at startup to use the settings on your USB stick.
