Hi, and welcome to the forums.
This really should be in a different forum, so perhaps one of the mods will move it to the appropriate location.
Partitioning is quite often the first big hurdle for new Linux users. We'd really need to know more about your distribution and computer setup before anyone can offer much help. If partitioning seems like a foreign language to you, it might be a good idea to setup your partitions from within Windows using Partition Magic, or some other partitioning program.
At any rate, I usually use parititions similar to the following:
/ (about 6GB)
swap (about 512MB)
/home (about 6GB)
