NIGHTMARE INSTALLING LINUX
Well, yesterday night i decided i wanted linux back on my main comp, so i started the netinstall, linux doesnt like my nforce 4 ethranet, so i install a pci ethranet port from a old box, then it works fine,it took about a hour, and i was getting x problems, i cant get past them, so i try to install yoper, again no luck, installation problems, so i pull out my fedora 4 set, doesnt wana find a peice of hardware and freezes before i hit the gui interface, on my last string i try vector... boots up, installs, wopsy doesnt work... So i try my debain installation again, same error, i try to trouble shoot it, no luck after many hours of googleing/forum posting. So.... i need a solution... I think i may be able to get debain working with a little more time, so ill post back later to see what happens...
ive been using linux for about a year now, this is the first major problem ive ran into

It used to be I would never recommend this, but you could look into Ubuntu 5.10.
A friend of mine wanted me to install Linux on his computer.
So I brought my Mepis 3.3.1 cd over and tried to install. Could not get internet access no matter how many things I tried.
Switched to Knoppix, same result.
Booted up with a Gentoo cd to see which module was installed for the network card, but alas no internet access.
He said he had a Ubuntu 5.10 cd, so I figured I would try that, SUCCESS.
It did take some work to get it installed because my friend has a strange setup on his pc, but I did manage to get it installed and internet access was just fine. How to know if you are a geek.
when you respond to "get a life!" with "what's the URL?"

SuSE 9.3 works happily with the ethernet port on my brothers computer (it also has nForce 4 board).
Life is complex, it has a real part and an imaginary part.

- 10-12-2005 #7i get slightly annoyed that they are the accepted packager by most who distribute software and drivers. when i try using slackware and install the ATI drivers and the ATI drivers only come packaged in rpm(and yes i know about the rpm2tgz tool)

truer words have never been spoken! my problem as it seems with slackware on my system with an ATI card is my chipset is KT600 which is not supported in the default kernel. and so far compiling a kernel is still out of my league. i have no idea what to select and not select in the configuration steps. i messed my system up the last time i tried.
- 10-12-2005 #10Have you considered using the 2.6 kernel? I've been told it's available for Slackware in the /testing branch. Or is that what you mean by "compiling the kernel is still out of my league"?
