I am not up on my linux history, but I am pretty sure (and think it is semi-adverstised this way) that Slackware is the oldest SURVIVING distro today...

I am pretty sure that there were ones before Slack, but Slack is the oldest one that is still around...again, not 100% on that, but about 90%:)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_distribution I found that link which appears to cover quite a bit of Linux history. Pretty interesting, I always wondered how Linux started..

Slackware was originally started by Linus himself actually, 1991. It was only until later that Patrick took over for development of the distro.

Really? Involvement with Slax isn't mentioned anywhere in "Just For Fun".

Anywho, according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_distribution), three early distros were:

    - MCC Interim Linux
    - TAMU
    - SLS

Slax was apparently created due to dissatissfaction with these.

Also recall that even before distros, there was simply grabbing the Linux kernel and compiling it in Unix or Minix or something, and installing it yourself.

So Linux has been around longer than distros.
