How we sound in the UK

Hi - I love the BBC website. There's a section devoted to how we sound these days. One of the charms of the UK is the way we speak and how different the local accents are.

I for one consider British accents on women quite sexy, regardless of the regional twist. Haha.

Accents are indeed, great. My parents are from London (cockney accents abound), my grandparents from Cornwall and i'm from the North. My sister's managed to gain a Lancashire accent but unfortunately i have a completely generic non-accent. Which is depressing, especially when your girlfriend tells you you'd sound sexier with a cockney accent

Yes, the US regional accents can be interesting as well, particularly when they're covered up or faked. The newscasters on CNN and other national American news broadcasts (as well as many actors) are trained to not use regional twangs in public speaking. Interestingly enough, when accents are used in movies they're almost always greatly exaggerrated (take the southern drawls in Varsity Blues or Happy, Texas for example).

Presidents have been known to show their accents as well. I found an interesting article on this:

    http://www.pbs.org/speak/seatosea/st.../presidential/

My family comes predominantly from the South (Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia), but our accents are all over the place. I have done my best to lose the southern accent all together, but it still pops up when I'm tired.

Scousers have the best accent (I live in Merseyside, lucky me).

I think Cornwall'ers have posh accents, one of my teachers has a Cornwall'ish accent, was strange in the beginning.

In fact, another teacher I had, had a Irish accent which was strange to get used to.

    He pronoucned edges as "ages".

My recent interest has been the detective on Nip/Tuck, played with a British accent by the lovely Rhona Mitra. She just drips sexy in that show.
