I won't comment further on that site though. I don't want to start a flamewar.

i work for county government and its the same way our employees are only allowed to use IE. now i get away with it through a loophole whereas i am a programmer so there is a need for me to test web code on different browsers otherwise i wouldnt beable to install firefox. though i have been working on them for years to try linux. they are soon going to implement a oracle database on a red hat server.
usually the county does it because they want to stick to a standard.

that is absolutely outrageous
how funny is it that they link to the microsoft website to describe IE but link to an easily misconstrued article about some security flaws being found in firefox to describe firefox. its so stupid its hilarious.

I saw that on another forum and was gonna post it here, but decided not to. We have the same problem here. Our county and city governments will not even consider alternatives to Windows and then complain about the high cost of computer maintanance.

I agree. Instead of the link they gave for IE, they could have used this one instead. The 2 articles about Firefox and Netscape are dated last April and the Firefox article said the hole already had a patch, whereas the IE link I found lists 3 holes in IE since April. Is this just ignorance, or is there collusion as well?

i think its all to do with red tape. because they have to use IE, they have to convince(con) users into believing that there are good reasons for their decisions to only use IE and not the alternatives. althought it seems strange that opera wasn't included. it almost as if microsoft forced upon them a clause whereby they had to "present the evidence for using IE over the alternatives"....although i would question the legality of that.
perhaps the council feel that their hands are as tied up as the employees who are forced to abide by the rules.

its not even about whats better its about making a set of standards because there are always some idiot users that will download stuff and hose thier PC. most that choose IE it is simply because IE comes preinstalled no need to worry about an install fouling things up. of course just as zealous people get around here about linux thier IT dept no doubt gets zealous about microsoft.
