c'mon people, we all know linux is bloated, more than windows, xp is the most lightweight os i've ever used. I think we're exaggerating a bit here. also, this is the BETA version of vista, who knows, the development team could be thinking "gee, this is really bloated, i think we need to shrink it down a bit". what do you expect from a beta? Then who knows, in 2007 when this goes final 384 mb ram might be nothing, i mean 2012 is when cpu speed is supposed to max out

I say merge it with the main vista thread
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/topic-50000.html
This way people can still *****/glorify it, and those that don't care (aka me) don't have to see 15 MS posts everyday.

You castigate "GNU elitists" when windows is (rightly or wrongly) bagged yet you do the same thing regarding Linux all the time even going so far as to start threads about it and all on a Linux forum!

windows isnt that bloated, just inefficiently programed, and theirs several distros that are much less bloated than windows, and if you do a minimal install of a linux distro it is usualy less bloated than windows, with windows you dont have choices..

well... it's not really Linux itself that's bloated, it's X windowing and the apps on top of that. But who wants to run a command line all the time?
And again, it's not windows i don't like, it's Microsoft that I don't like... and it's not like i'm looking forward to vista or anything, it looks really bad to me, especially when you think about all the activation crap they're gonna have on it by then. but we do have to look at where linux and it's apps fall short. like open office is really bloated... so is kde and gnome and both of those crash a lot... i've never used a problem-free linux app. but all windows apps are awesome with stability and stuff. but that's right now. what's to say that the linux apps won't get any better? well they won't get any better if nobody uses them. I think that in say, 6 or 7 years linux will truly be equal or maybe better than windows, including it's apps, because on an evolutionary scale things like gimp, x.org, firefox etc can only get better.
i really wish that people would stop misunderstanding me... i think pro-linux people can be very oppressive when it comes to this topic where they just cannot admit that windows is better at some things right now. things don't get any better if you don't have constructive criticism to guide it.

first note that i use windows regularly still... as an oem system developer i went to a local ms conference a while back (great way to get free stuff ...) and must have checked a 'send me more crap in the mail' box on something and low and behold the beta disc for vista arrived in the mail... its still sitting in its pretty packaging, celaphane and all, on one of my desks ... where it will remain til i tire of looking at it (like the ms office 2003 development discs and many other microsoft based crap i don't feel like wasting my time on). first ... their betas ALWAYS suck soooooo bad it is funny... it is just a way to let ms addicted tech geeks to get off... and the anti microsoft folks to say SEE SEE LOOK HOW BAD THIS IS OMG OMG OMG!!! i never bat an eye at their software until AT LEAST rc1 and then with their os's i wait til rc2 most of the time too.. and usually those are so poorly compiled and buggy they are silly to worry about anyway ... but at least you have a better feel for the software. the point of a beta is to look at what they are trying to do ... in this case it appears they are taking xp and updating the front end ... most of the 'under the hood' appears to be the same 6 year old software we have seen for oh so long... but they have a reputation to release new ... release better... so they will keep tweaking the system they already have working 'fairly well' and up the requirements (this is for their hardware contracts.... not for actually running the software hehe... 'yes intel... it will say they need a better processor... yes... mmmhmmmm desposit the money in the same account...: bottom line... WHO CARES ... if you dont like windows ... don't look at it ... if you do but don't think its worth messing with yet... look but don't touch... and if you are one of those tech geeks or anti-windows/ms folks ... have fun with the install ... and hopefully someone will listen.... me i'm going to keep trying to get my MEPIS install to work right on another box ... and keep tweaking this box til my mouse and keyboard fall asleep from overuse)
but what do i know or care ... munkeez?Old Skewl - AMD Athlon XP 1600+ / 512mb / 160gb / nVidia GeForce 4 4800ti 128mb / openSUSE 10.0 / 2.6.13-15 / (puter geek . linux noob)

Just out of interest, is there anywhere on here (like a dedicated thread), where we can bash windows? If not does anybody know of a good forum/place to vent ones displeasure of the M$ operating systems?

My old mum (and she would kill me for calling her that!) always says, "Don't make something more important by talking about it". Well... she actually says, "Don't make someone more important than they are by talking about them."
I reserve the right to take what someone says, study it, make improvements and distribute it to my neighbours.
I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. - Pablo Picasso
