It takes a while to make the change from windows to linux so you have to stick with it. You have to read about it and make an honest attempt to learn. After that it becomes easier and easier. Writing disparaging posts on linux forums is not the way to get help or to make progress.

If you find life with linux so much harder than life with windows, then use windows. Don't bother people who prefer linux wih your views.

    Time to lock this???

lol its cause its fedora core 4....which comes with software thats still in development (like...gcc 4.0.1 or something). Try downloading gcc 3.4.4 and see if your problems go away (or some of them at least).

    That's the spirit

I used windows exclusively until about a year ago when I started dabbling in linux. I hated my first installation (RedHat9) and gave up after a month. About 6 months later I decided to give it a fair shot and installed SuSE9.1 and I've never looked back! My initial dislike was caused a little by my original choice of distro (nothing wrong with RedHat, it's just not for me), and mostly by my lack of effort.

Remember, you've been using windows for YEARS, and it has become the "natural" way to use a computer. Of course linux will seem odd when you first use it. Just perservere and (very important) ask good questions!

You will find people on this forum exceptionally helpful if you ask questions in the right way.

Good luck -- go switch your computer off, have a beer, and chill out for the night!

EDIT:: I'd recommend SuSE10.0. Go for the eval version, unless you have strong feelings about everything being open source.

    Study up

I think Fedora's a great distro that's also user-friendly, while not too user-friendly. Unless you use Rawhide (über bleeding-edge), it's stable. There's also a plethora of packages and support.

    either
    gcc-3.4.4.tar.bz2
    gcc-3.4.4.tar.gz

I usually just use tar.gz but it doesn't really make a diffrence.
If your gonna use bz2 use

    bunzip2

    then

    tar -xf name-of-file.tar
