Haha. My thoughts exactly. I think the first question that should be asked is "Who here will actually BUY a PS3?"

Simply because ATi is creating the graphics technology for the Xbox 360, I would buy a PS3. Yes, I hate ATi. Very much.

    Exactly.

I'm sick of the console wars. I've had five generations of nintendo consoles, and four of it's handhelds, as well as the PS2 and constantly upgrading PCs for games. I'm out of it. I'm not spending any more money just to be obsolete in two years =D

That's one of the beauties of *nux. You can get full functionality pretty much by utilizing the CLI only, and run it on an archaic machine.

Anyway, I've promised myself I'm never buying another proprietary piece of hardware for gaming, and if I'm doing any more, the games will be for my Debian box, lessening my dependence on this *explicatives deleted* Dell that I've been using up to this point.

PS3 is a power PC so windows will not work on it. OSX will work just because it is a power PC.

I actually think that the fact that the PS3 will come with some version of linux is pretty rubbish, really. I mean, come on, is the casual gamer really gonna want to play with linux? No. Are they even going to know what it is? Probably not. And the fact that they have netbsd is going to confuse people even more.

Not me. I like a big screen for gaming.

methinks that they aren't going to put it on for the geeks out there . they need a reliable multitasking OS for the different operations that they want the PS3 to do. they wouldn't want to put windows on for that now would they? hopefully this could mean we'll begin to see a couple of ports from PS3 to linux from dedicated companies. it shouldn't be too hard compared to porting to windows, since they'd only need to reprogram from Cell to x86(_64) instead of Cell to x86(_64) AND linux+openGL to windows + directX.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

Yes Linux on the PS3, now imagine how it will work with the Cell, THAT is the interesting part. Imagine the 8 cores being virtualized into 8-way SMP instead of 1 core for audio, etc. We may actually be able to use the full 4+GhZ power of the CPU. Now, only if I could play Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory on it....But still, imagine KDE/GNOME running at the speed of light, and maybe a WORKING X Composite Manager. Hmm.....just imagine.....

If I end up getting a PS3, then I would probably do it, as I did with my XBOX and I think it still has some distro on it...I will have to look into it. It's just cool to have on there when bored.

    I'm such a geek.
