since i am partially psychic i will tell you the furture of Linux. it will be slow but gain acceptance among everyone. slowly people will grow angry that microsoft bilked them for so long. they will petition the federal government to act and bill will have to give each US ctizen a 1000 bucks. this will bankrupt bill and he will become a hobo hopping from train to train accross the US. Linus will be the first US president to be foreign born. also one of the things that will happen is linux will require you have a middle name so techie moe will either have to make one up or use N for ever. btw we will never see that damn flying car we have been promised. (this primarily has to do with little old people not being able to see over the yoke) accident by a miss florence johnson flying her car into a Starbucks & Apollos(new CEO of starbucks renames in 2012 due to his fanatical devotion to Battlestar Galactica) and causing legislation banning all flying cars. now everyone travels by Gello Shooters(kinda way to technical for me to explain how that works but trust me its good for the environment, Fast and leaves a nice after taste) the new religion that replaces every religion on earth is the Jedi Order. sometime in the future someone invents a linux powered lightsaber thus convincing everyone of the validity of the order of the Jedi(so far a sith cult has yet to arrive). after that they will relize its silly and follow the LOTR as a religion after someone finds The One Ring in a cracker jack box...powered by linux. i guess this linux thing is a powerful thing!

btw i said only partially psychic so if some or none of these predictions dont come true then i was gassy that day and it flawed my predictions!

It all deals with how the brain processes incoming light rays.
Thank you Captain Obvious. I did go to school, thanks. It was an example. I could have easily said, "I have two eyes." "Yes, I concur, you have two eyes."

Heh...yeah, back to the point, the future of linux:)

I guess the whole reason why I was saying the things that I was, was because the initial poster was saying that the CLI was too complicated for the average home user and that the CLI had to be used for too much currently, therefore, linux was really not ready for the average home user.

I was just trying to say, that I believe that it is ready, given the fact that the type of things the average home user will be using does not need any CLI activity. It seemed like the initial poster was a bit misguided by thinking that no matter what you wanted to use linux for, that CLI was intregal to normal usage...I just don't buy that. CLI is there, but most users just surfing or doing other standard things in the DE, never need to bother with CLI...

Heh...I will stop arguing, because I think I have rambled on this point way too much already.

The average newbie in linux, once the installation phase has completed, will have a very capable and easy to use system for normal tasks. So, with that segment of users, the CLI is not the issue or obstacle, it is simply getting past the installation and hardware configuration phase. That, is what I feel the future of linux should focus on. Obviously, more available systems with linux preinstalled will solve that problem!

I can't remember if this has been mentioned (senility is creeping in ) but I've recently been playing around with livecd's and I think these have been making a huge impact on the popularity of linux. Even as an old user, I find these things to be a lot of fun.

Anyone can throw in a cd and run a complete linux system with pretty much no effort. When you think about it, this is extremely cool, and over time will demystify linux for the masses
