Im just a linux/unix beginer.. i was just wondering.. whats the real point behind all of this.. dont get me wrong.. this is GREAT/SECURE, wonderful technology.. but honestly.. what is everyone elses views?
Basically.. this is a poll of "what the hell do you use your linux box/distro for?"

SuSE 10 - suits basic needs for a media station, doing school work, instant messaging friends, printing, emailing, etc. etc. It's basically a standard desktop..
FreeBSD - Runs my webserver.
OpenBSD - on my other box with FBSD that runs the webserver. It just sits on the other drive, it's a play thing I guess. I occasionally boot into it and update date it, and make sure that the security is all up to date and such. Not really good for anything but I can say I am a l33t h4x0r.

FreeBSD - Something to bang away at now and again because I'm a bit of a masochist. Doesn't do anything I want it to...yet.Registered Linux user #270181

Fighting with Mandriva 2006 (so far, a real pain in the arse) on present machine.
Using IPCop on an old pile of parts for internet access via dial-up (works great but it's quite ugly ...no case, MBoard, Video & Lan card, power supply, hard drive, 5 port switch & external modem in a heap on my desk).
Kubuntu -- Ubuntu free CD from shipit with KDE added via download...I really like U/KU buntu, especially with kde. Gnome is prettier, but just can't seem to get used to it. Everything works with Ubuntu...still playing with kubuntu, but i expect the same....great support community.
I have Knoppix 4 DVD version installed on one machine....I know I know, not supposed to install it to hard disk, but aside from screwed up networking and no automount of USB camera, it's great for the kids cuz it's loaded with games & stuff for them to play with.
Have also used, Mepis, Libranet, Yoper, DSL and Puppy.
Puppy is very cool, a little rough on the edges for an everyday O.S., but I imagine in the near future it will make the grade...If you have an old machine or a spare, Puppy is highly recommended to play with.
Why all these?....guess I'm a distro junkie. What I really wan't is an O.S. that just works out of the box, has KDE, can be used as a firewall, will serve internet to my LAN, will share files and devices to my LAN, will recognize my digital camera when I plug it in, and will do all this with point & click ease and without me having to use my brain too much (AKA read lot's of man pages, type lots of stuff at the command line)
I subscribed to Linux-magazine (they send a dvd based O.S. every month) and keep hoping next months issue will bring the answer.

Slackware 10.2
Multiple Reasons
Secure - I hated having to run a firewall and worry about adware and viruses, I also like how Linux deals with security through user accounts and permissions; it's simple and effective.
Enviroments - I like being able to choose what enviroment I want to work in, most common three are KDE, XFCE4 and the console.
Console - It's great being able to do nearly everything at the console, although I know GUI has it's place in the world I prefer CLI (although it does need to improved).
Great enviroment for programming - Linux seems to have been designed for programmers, tweakers and hackers. Whilst I know not enough to justify using Linux, it's a great learning enviroment. eg. If I want to program in C++, rather than having to download DevC++ in Windows I'm able to write the program in Vim and just compile it using gcc, simple eh?
Learning Factor - I'm really interested in computers and want to leave my options open, however, since I prefer Maths I am doing a 100% Maths degree. I still wanted to continue my study of computers and using Linux has provided this for me.
Control - I hate it when programs assume they know best, I'd much rather give it explicit options as to what to do. Most Linux programs give me this option, it's also probably why I enjoy the CLI.
Those are the reasons. :P[/code]
