theres reason say if your a 3d house(big users of linux). Many of the open source 3d moddling apps do not cut it since there either to dificult or dont have the nessary tools, this is where comercial companys fill the gaps. where as in other areas open source software is strong for example many of the rendering and clustering software in linux are great. Also i gather that many users are advicates of choise, yet compleatly pooping on comercial software is some what of hypocritical much like certain groups and entities i can name. Bottom line is that to offer users choise both comercial and open source apps should be offerd.

Yep. Sometimes people just bash stuff regardless of whether it's rational or not.

    That didn't answer my question.

chompin, you're really not in a position to say that.

No thanks. I think that the Open Source community is way better than anything corporate. Maybe when I was first starting I would've, but not at this point.

Even in a world of OSS there will always be some level of commercialism. Vendors writing apps as required by businesses, vendors providing support packages (As OSS vendors do now).

There will always be commercial software, especially in the corporate world where companies develop their own in-house software and sure as hell aren't going to give it out to their competitors.

And hey while obscurity is not security there are times when keeping code closed is a better idea for all concerned.

One last thing. I am a big open source supporter - but it's up to the community of developers to capture my interest with applications, not for me to turn around and say I am open source I will suffer an inferior product. If someone takes this kind of stance they have already proved their opinion to be useless. Software is not about politics, it is about getting the job done. The politics of licensing aren't even considered until the need is met at the right time and price.

The petition looks like it was written by someone whose first language is not English. It doesn't read well, and if you want to be taken seriously you have to have a coherent argument. I won't sign my name to something when I don't think there's a problem in the first place.
