This has been asked a lot, and I'll answer what I always answer: for display cards, go Nvidia. The 6600GT is a good bargain, the 6800 or 7800GT/GTX are the power cards.

C-Media soundcards have worked well for me. I don't do wireless LAN so I can't recommend anything there.

Most other hardware doesn't matter, it should work fine in Linux.

I'm on Newegg and making a list for you of my best recommendations for you. I'll say your budget limit is absolutely $1000. This will get you a fine rig. Here's what I come up with.

    ABS Stealth aluminum case /// http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811215002 /// $115
    Sony DVD burner /// http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827131258 /// $41
    NEC CRT Monitor /// http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824002248 /// $190
    ASUS Socket 939 mobo /// http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131569 /// $92
    AMD Athlon 64 3800+ /// http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103531 /// $282
    XFX GeForce 6800 /// http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150111 /// $209
    Rosewill 1gb RAM /// http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820223047 /// $86
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Total: $1,015

This is a basic high-end system. If you want to go cheaper on the monitor, that's the one place I would start to cut back on. You might already have a monitor hanging out at home. Don't forget that I did not include a mouse, keyboard, or speakers. I hope this gives you an idea of where to start looking for hardware. Cross-check prices and items between places like Newegg.com, Tigerdirect.com, your favorite local hardware store, and anywhere else you can think of.

I have a question about motherboards. How do you know which one you want to get? I know memory expansion is important and stuff but what else do you base it on?

mainly the chipset it uses (e.g. VIA,,nForce SIS etc..), what onboard stuff it has e.g. gb lan, sound, wifi, sata/sata2, pci-x etc... Also its price, and performance based on reviews from either anandtech or tom's hardware

personally I've had no problems with ASUS and nForce based boards, it is a really good combo if you are going for an AMD based system. (Just IMO).
Life is complex, it has a real part and an imaginary part.

Yeah that's what a friend of mine told me. I would like to build a computer specifically for the purpose of running Linux also. I already have all my parts picked out.....Now I just need money .

I'm 'managing' to build a pretty low spec computer, 64 bit, decent graphics card, for around $400, although i do have a dvd burner and HD already, and gfx card...so all it is, is a processor, mobo, RAM, PSU, fans and a case

I'm building the entire thing from scratch, it will cost about $1000 USD. I'll post the parts another time, gotta run now..
