Well, i guess that demise of my harddrive is enivitable. I hope it will last for a while because Fedora Core seemed to have "united my harddrives" (they seem to mount in the same place, and act as 1 unit) So i'm assuming that if one died, my computer would't funtion any more, and i would need a fresh install. Also if this 30GB one dies my second harddrive is only 6 gigs so i'l have very little space for my files/programs.

I would like to post, the sound, but i have no recording device here, so i'm afraid that its not possible.

And as for my computer, i guess i will try leaving it on all the time, cuz it would seem that no matter what i do, i am pretty doomed ...

I leave my system on all the time, though I really shouldn't, since I have a brand new monster size nvidia video card a brand new monster size seagate hard drive and each and every one of my motherboard slots are used. And I only have one fan. Oh, and I'm only using a 200 watt power supply with no surge protector.

i leave the server on as much as possible, but sum1 like my mum or dad come along and turn it off, and screw it all up heh

my desktop isnt on very often anyway, always use my lappy, so norm its off, and it sounds like a jet

the mac is always on, i just close over the lig (ibook) and it goes to sleep, when i open it, everything is still there, nothingaffected
    so i keep the uptime

i dont mind the sounds of the fans tbh

It's actually very quiet... but that's only because I bought an expensive hdd and only have one fan... you can hardly hear anything when it's on. Which concerning the fan might be a bad thing. But the only reason I haven't installed more fans is that my case only has one fan port. I bought the case in 1998. In fact, the motherboard is from 1998 too... that's why I can only have 384 mb ram on a 100 mhz fsb. Otherwise I've upgraded everything I can. In fact, until two years ago, I only had an 8 mb video card with an ISA dialup modem on 128mb of ram on a 12 gb hdd. With no surge protector. On Windows 95.

I think you could mod your case to accept another fan. Might be scary cutting holes in it, but I would do it if it was me.

I know of a company in England that always gets invited to speak at Open Source conventions. They have Linux installed for over 9 years now. They say they leave their computers on all the time, and do not take it down for maintenance purposes (as is common with Linux). They wouldn't even want to for another reason: the server room is located in a crime-ridden area and is behind locks and bolts; the only time the server is brought down is to replace one of the hard disks.

My PC has a peak power consumption of nearly 400watts that reduces to to less than 20 watts after the CPU hibernats (wake on interrupt), monitor goes to sleep, and the HDDs spool down (I have the luxury of access to an AC power meter). This is on par with a single power saving florescent light bulb, or the same as a few energy vampyres (say three or four TVs, VCRs, or microwave ovens that are turned off but still pluged into the AC outlet). At 0.08 CAD per kWh that equals 14.02 CAD a year (idle).

So long as you have an intelligent power management setup there is nothing wrong with having your PC powered 24/7.
