Here in laid back, overly relaxed , California it's 65mph, but in more civilised states it's 70 or 75

70 mph... through the truck gate and into and through the company parking lot.

Now mind you, this was a parking lot at an auto production facility near Detroit, so the lot was huge, with plenty of room to crank it up. The Senior Security Officer, who happened to be waiting at my desk as I arrived that day, was a former, Combat Decorated, US Marine Officer. He was not in a pleasant mood that morning. He had several recommendations for me which in general, related to assuring that, in future, specific areas of my present anatomical configuration remained unchanged. I believe he wanted to kill me.

I never drove fast through the truck gate again.

Well so far, 118mph in my 1.8i MG ZS, and 127mph in my dad’s 2002 Saab 9-5 aero both with me driving, however at a track he took it off the clock at an indicated 155mph, wow that thing was quick! (it is no more, since it self combusted in our driveway ).

It’s interesting to see that a lot of people from the states don’t, or haven’t driven much more than 85mph – possibly partly due to the 55-65mph speed limit, however here in the UK it’s common for people to drive at 80mph+, I for one drive to work down country back roads, sometimes hitting 100mph. I guess it’s all to do with the perception in different countries, the laws, and the road and cars.

Logically it doesn’t make sense, The US having big V8,s long wide roads, and driving at 55mph, where as in the UK we have little cars, little engines, small narrow bendy roads, yet we drive fast!

I remember hitting 90+ MPH on some back road in Norfolk. I was in a VW Polo CL, so things were starting to rattle a bit. The road was completely deserted for miles.

I've never really been a 'fast' driver though. Seen too many bad cases for that.

Had a buddy that took me out in his 82 Porsche 911 s/c that had a 1997 turbo engine in it, got that up to around 160mph or so, it felt like being kicked in the back when it accelerated. Fastest I have ever been when I was driving was around 195km/h, that was fast enough for me, and I hope I never reach any speeds like that ever again unless I am on a track.

Well, earlier I said that the fastest I'd ever been was 100 mph. I wasn't driving - a so-called friend of mine was taking us both to a wedding in Harrogate in Yorkshire and he was in a hurry (his fault).

As we hit the ton, he said, "I saw an accident here once. God, it was awful. The car just hit the barrier and flipped over." Us next, I thought.

When we got to Harrogate, he got lost. He literally did a handbrake turn around a corner, scaring me to death. He's the second worst driver I've ever been in a car with. The first prize for that goes to a 70 year old speed freak who would make Thelma and Louise look like dodgem drivers.
