I have noticed this as well.
Clicking the middle button on the tab in FF in Windows will close the tab.
Doing the same in Linux will bring up a random website.
I think it has to do with whats in the page you are clicking.
I could be wildly off, but when I middle cliked here in the forum I was directed to the Fedora Home page.

What extensions do you have installed? i had a problem like that, and it was an extension that pressing middle button took you to a relevent site about the word you clicked on

Go to about:config and set middlemouse.contentLoadURL to false.

Middle mouse clicking is very usefull, you highlight a link in irssi or any terminal ( irssi being on the terminal ), and then use middle click in firefox to have it go to the link. This is not a bug.
Also further on this, because I use a command line mp3 player, I can highlight the song I'm playing, middle click it into firefox and it brings up the lyrics for me.
There are other usefull things like klipper which allows you to copy content to the clipboard from anywhere, and also uses "keys" in order to tell what the content is, you can set it so that if it's a link, a menu pops up where your mouse is and allows you to select "open with firefox".
