My Hard Drive Died Yesturday
I not sure if anyone remembers my noisy hardrive (http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/topic-61717.html) but it died two days ago. It all started when GNOME started giving me errors and crashed when i tried to log in. So i used KDE until applications started giving me read access errors, and then some programs like open office stopped working all together. Soon i found that su didn't work any more, and so i figured that i would restart the computer and my problems would go away. However, i soon found that Fedora Core wouldn't boot anymore. it seems that my entire /etc file is gone. I was able to call one of my friends who helped me mount a floppy using linux resuce, and i backed my important data on a floppy and transfered it to my windows computer. Now, all i need is a new hardrive. I was relievied when i discovered that i can buy a maxtor for under $60. Well, at least i can look at the bright side; No more linux problems for a few more days

It's crap when that happens -- at least you had some warning.
My main internal drive AND my backup external drive died in the same week! No warning. One minute I had a working drive, and the next I couldn't boot my computer. After a few days my backup went as well

- 12-06-2005 #3More than a warning, reflecting on the moment, i guess i saw my hardrive slooooooooowly die before my eyes. Of course i wasn't smart enought to realize that my hardrive was the problem or i would have backed up everything beforEhand. But, hey what can you expect of 7 year old hardware that you find lying around in a workplace. Its a miracle that it even worked in the first place! My recommendation to cheapskates like me: DON'T STORE IMPORTANT DATA ON SOMETHING YOU FIND ON THE STREET.

Yeah my hard drive died last week with a lot of my important info on it (I am too cheap to buy new equipment so all the stuff I have is crap that people give away). Now I make sure to back up my stuff and I enabled SMART on all my computers and installed smartmontools so I can check whether my hard drives are about to die.

- 12-07-2005 #6That sounds like a bad motherboard because I had the same problem and had to send it to Dell to get fix.

- 12-07-2005 #7I returned it to HP and they installed a new hard drive. They didn't touch the motherboard and everything has been operating fine ever since. To be honest I think it was just a stupid coincidence
