    .eu domain registration

Today, 7th December 2005, the preregistration started for those companies seeking to obtain the eu top level domain for their website. Preregistration is open to those running a business with its seat in Europe and is a European resident. According to official sources, the current balance at end of play of the day stands at 80.000 preregistrations and peak demand was measured at 60 per second. Actual registration starts Spring 2006, during which time proof may have to be submitted on meeting the conditions.

This opportunity was welcomed by European businesses apparently and very timely too as many seek for the US to surrender its ultimate rights to domain registration, as has been hotly debated in the recent past. The European Commission states:
"While the European Commission, together with the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers, has created the legal framework for “.eu” by means of EU legislation, the .eu top level domain is managed and operated by a private, not-for-profit Registry, EURid."
