    I actually handled a tarantula once at a show. The animal expert there said that the hairs are quite dangerous and cause more problems than anyone getting bitten ... You don't want to get a tarantula hair in your eye!

    Nothing I can find says the hairs are actually poisonous. They're just very fine and barbed, and can work their way into skin or other tissue, causing a rash or an infection. Think of a tarantula as a very small porcupine with too many legs.
