The Malaysian government agencies’ OSS initiative was shelved quietly after a meeting between Bill Gates and high level government officials. Although no detail on the nature of the meeting was released, it was widely speculated that MicroSoft was using its massive user base and market domination to apply pressure on the Malaysian government to halt their OSS adoption initiative in many of its agencies. This comes after BSA ( an anti piracy watchdog funded by major software companies ) urged the public institutions not to “fall into the ideology trap of OSS movement, but to consider products on their own merits”.
