Matrix Linux Distro?

I have a very rough idea for a Matrix Linux Distro. It will somehat resemble the Matrix but take key features from it.

1. If one of the operator typed anything in, they could retreive data. WHat if you could do that. Somebody could have a server that has all of wikipedia xml files. Then somebody could develop a file to read them.

2. The interface would be different. You could program to look like the scrolling green letters and try to read it I guess. This would allow for a very customizable interface.

3. A program that constanly updates your resrources and such with the server.

For the server idea, I was wondering is it possible to make a huge server by combining other servers. This would allow for other servers.

I am a newb and this is just a idea.

Is their a matrix distro or something like it?

ok mate, its just a film. you need to think about wether that would actually be useful rather than just 'cool' and how many people would actually be willing to spend time doing it, let alone actually using it.
good luck tho, you've got every right to try something new!

1) ...what?

2) There's a Matrix screensaver that resembles the screen from the Matrix. If you want green letters on a black background, you can easily do that in any terminal.

3) ...what?

I completely fail to see what you're trying to propose... Explain a bit more, please?

so the point of this distro would be to be a different way to access wikipedia? ... sounds like a waste of development time IMHO, if that's all it would do... if it did more maybe it might be worth looking into

Cool But a dark linux distro would be better for the eyes

(I know this is an old post but I post here anyway.)

I agree that a Matrix distro is pretty far out there..
But a linux distro with a black/dark theme would be a good idea.

Almost all OS and distros have white backgrounds and windows, with a distro with black/dark background and windows would be better to look at for the eyes because it would not be as much light to the eyes.

For instance like this :
Text Editors: DarkCopy Online Fullscreen Text Editor

I'm fond of the "darklooks" theme in Ubuntu.

Why? We already have google. Are you proposing storing all of these files locally? That would require hardware and administration investments beyond the scope of what most would be willing (or even able) to cough up.

Sounds like what you're proposing is a theme. There are a number of themes available on the web, that with some tweaking, could be knocked into service as a Matrix theme. I like the dark look too. I usually customize my install to reflect my taste, once I have the extra time. Firefox, Amarok, and other apps have themes available too. If you have the time and the inclination, you could make it your mission to develop a series of themes that would integrate to give you a system-wide Matrix theme. If you use Gnome or KDE, you could go to GNOME-LOOK or KDE-LOOK and make your ideas known. You might even find a talented artist, willing to assist you. After all, the fact that there exist satanic ubuntu, muslim ubuntu, christian ubuntu, etc., etc., ad infinitum... ad nauseum... should tell you that no idea is beyond development if there is a user base or at least one motivated person with the resources.

It can be done, but again... why? These resources are freely available on the web, and most are updated with reasonable frequency.

Yes, it is possible. Beowulf and other initiatives have addressed this issue quite successfully. Linux is one of the most scalable OS's in existance, so it's not even a question.

Hey, nothing wrong with having an idea. Ideas are the fuel that feed our imagination.

Not that I've seen. But as I've already alluded to; I think what you're describing can be distilled down to two items... a theme and a database. Am I wrong? The theme is doable. The database... well, not practical enough to be realized.

I knew I was going to regret answering rather than locking this thread. Questio verum, I'm pretty sure the original poster is past this particular issue as his original question was nearly 3 years ago.

Bork, if you'd like to discuss the relative merits of darker desktops, please start another thread. It's an interesting topic. I just think perhaps it should be divorced from this particular thread.
