I'm curently looking into building a distro of linux aimed at web hosts who want a reliable server system but don't have a huge budget, or for the do-it-youselfer who wants a good and safe basement server, but doesn't know too much about setting one up... i have most of my sotware picked out, Apache, PHP, MySQL, Courier, Postfix, ect... and using VHCS (Virtual Hosting Control System) for the panel.... but here are my issues/questions:
1) I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good base to build a hardened server on... currently i'm prototyping with HLFS (Hardened Linux From Scratch) but i've heard a few bad things about normal LFS, but mainly i hear it's a good system.
2) sorta goes with #1... i don't really know how to make it portable, like making an acctual install disk that would install the system onto other computers... people have suggested linux-live.org.... but after searching the documentation, i think i could make an installer, but it wouldn't be very user friendly and i don't know how reliable it would be.... i have done a bit of reseach into basing my system on fedora, if i were to do that, i think i could use the Anaconda installer engine, and i'm fairly sure that would do what i need... so summed up how can i make a very relialble installer?
3) i would need a package managment system and an updater like Yum for this to be a reliable system (this probably wouldn't be a problem if i chose a fedora base)... i'm fairly sure i can use RPM as a package manager, but i'm not sure.... and as for an update client, i don't know where to start.
4) last but not least, i'll need developers, if your interested in becomming one or just helping out send me a PM.
The address is BlueChipLinux.org (the server isn't setup yet, but i have bought the domain :P)
