I doubt that you will receive any network topology diagrams since many of us who have them are work related = security implications. Anyway, I am more than happy to share with you how I employ Linux within my environment.
My work environment is 99.8% WinTel with the exception of a few Linux and SCO servers. We utilize Linux as Web and file servers and with that aside, that is the gist of our Linux deployment. I absolutely refuse to deploy a Web site utlizing IIS. Apache is far better in the Web serving role, by far. As for file servers, it is hard to pass up a hardware only cost in deploying a highly available file/print server. And yes, Samba works well with Windows Active Directory.

Hands on and frequenting this forum is the best way to learn. Everything that I've learned about Linux is via trial and error and I still have a long way to go. I sandbox everything I do prior to launching it into a production environment. I would start out by configuring an Apache server then move on to Samba. Once you master those network services then you are well on your way. As for mixing Linux with Windows, that is just about as far as you can go aside from database and email implementations.
