I never suggested the "analysts" should be given credance. I was merely pointing out that there was an article on "The Register" speculating Linux might be the basis of a Google OS. I linked the second story to demonstate there were two articles on the same web page with entirely different conclusions drawn from the same rumor. If anything, that should tell you I don't put much faith in what the "analysts" say either. Did you think otherwise?

i was rather annoyed with the whole affair on a whole because i thought it would be cool for those web surfing check my email types to have a cheap pc that wont get hijacked within 3 minutes of being on the web. also i wasnt saying you made the assumption, but that the register did. i have grown to not trust the register for that same reason. however several posters on this thread did fall into the rumor and get all excitied for the rumor mill being spewed forth. i always say dont believe it till you see it.

So you were posting in order to stimulate conversation and demonstrate different points of view. Yes, I would have done the same thing. In a way I bet you wanted to see just what kind of response you would get; would someone think about this and post an intelligent reply?

I suspect a lot of these 'analysts' are just fishing. Sooner or later one of them is going to strike lucky and be dead right. Based on their amazing powers of second sight they will land a funny money job in 'financial futures', and retire in the South of France ... on a yacht ... with a heli-pad ... and Paris Hilton.

I almost feel that Google has gone too far though. Here in the UK there's a supermarket called Tescos. You can buy your food from Tescos, get a financial loan, run your mobile phone and the Devil knows what else. Soon my middle name will be 'Tescos': if you get my drift?

Here in the USA, it's Wal-Mart. They don't have a bank yet, but they're working on it:

Such a PC for the common user would be a real blessing. It would be nice if we were pleasantly surprised. I think if anyone could pull it off, Google could.

Maybe to a lesser degree. My main reason for linking "The Register" in regards to the rumor of a Google PC was because carlosponti posted:
i kinda wonder where the speculation that it would be a *nix based OS anyhow. no where in the article did speculation point to linux at any point.
I was just pointing out that there were some articles out there that did. That doesn't mean I put any stock in what the article said.

That's an interesting article Moe. Not sure if I want to love Walmart or hate them. On the one hand they're offering bank accounts to people who are financially excluded. On the other hand I have an inbuilt suspicion of large organisations which appear to be offering something for nothing. I feel genuinely confused by that!

Not to get too off-topic, but I'm conflicted as well. Wal-Mart generally offers bar none the best price on most goods in my part of the US, but their business practices in order to offer things at that price (pressuring manufacturers, buying from overseas sweat shops, purposefully operating at a loss in order to kill local businesses) are questionable at best.

Thanks Moe: I knew there'd be a snag somewhere.
