Y'know, I love Google, but this seems a bit much...

I mean, I'd appreciate a low-cost PC that comes without Windows. But this seems a bit out of Google's league. The article makes a good point that with Apple and Linux already providing for the alternative-OS crowd, Google isn't likely to make a dent.

Personally, I'd rather see Google devote their energy elsewhere.

I think Google have the power to make this work, they certainly have the brand clout. I work in IT, and you would not believe the number of people who don't know how to use a browser if the homepage is not Google. It's pretty frustrating to explain to people that the URL is not to be typed into the google search. If Google did use a linux based OS, it would go a long way to making linux accepted by Joe General User. It's really just a case of making users aware of alternatives at this point, linux is not lacking in functionality.

if google does use linux or any *nix like os for their google operating system. I doubt it would make any significant difference in the number of linux users, or awareness of the gnu/linux os. I mean, mac os has some BSD code in it. But from what i can tell that hasnt made any huge contribution to the *BSD communities?

Yeah, I know what you mean. I remember once trying to explain the difference between google and a web browser to my wife. The thing was that my homepage is set to google, so when ever you open up firefox you get google. It took a very frustrating hour before she understood.
