    Question LinuxForums.org Main Index Page

Just yesterday, the "Currently Active Users" section of the board on the main index page said the most users ever on line was something like 362 on December 22, 2005 (or thereabout).

    Today, it says:

Most users ever online was 908, Today at 12:15 AM.

How did we pick up so many extra users all at once, and where did they all go... anyone know?

My guess would be is it is some sort of glitch.
Normally at that time of morning there is hardly anybody here.
And to have that be the busiest time just seems weird.

Yeah, you're probably right about the glitch. I wondered at first if perhaps there had been some kind of official announcement about the forums ownership and upgrade changes posted somewhere on one of the big sites like slashdot, and it was causing a large influx of readers.

If it was that, they sure fizzled out in a hurry!

I happened to refresh the index page of Linux forums when I noticed that there was 908 people online. I was suprised You never know, I mean it could have be a glitch but I doubt it. There is nearly over 100 guests at any one time on the website (well that I have noticed anyway).

You do realize that at any hour of the day it is every hour of the day around the world?

(Granted - the expanse of the oceans may have an effect on certain parts of the daily cycle of site activity...)

    EDIT:
(Maybe the admins could set up a page that graphically shows the "real time" site activity (number of active users) by hour/day/week/month/etc.?)

Looking at the old site's database, most users ever online was about 2,400. Yesterday Google referred to us about 14,000 Sessions, that can explain it...

    Yes, I realize that.
But I have noticed that in the wee hours of the morning in EST, that there is hardly anybody here.
But in the later hours it gets busier.

I noticed this because I work odd hours. I get home at 3:00 a.m. EST, and I spend an hour or so.
Get up about noon or 1:00, and this place is busier.

This is an odd day as I had last night off.

Yeah, it's normally quite slow around here at 12:15 am (i'm in the Central Standard Time zone). It's usually perhaps a crowd of about 15 to 40 at that time (including guests), so the 908 number seems high for that period.

Doesn't really matter, though. It just struck me as odd.

Out of curiosity, what is it you do for a living?
