I think it's a great distribution and has come a long way in terms of becoming user-friendly.

    Get CD delivered to you.
Install Ubuntu using just one CD.
Most things are usually ready and working (at least they was for me).
Anything else you need can be grabbed using synaptic.

However, IIRC it doesn't come with a compiler by default. I think this says a lot about the distribution, I think it's trying to achieve something which I wouldn't have thought Linux was aiming for, user-friendliess, possibly at the risk of encapsulating the system (in a certain respect).

Saying this though doesn't imply I think Ubuntu isn't suitable for "power users", I believe Ubuntu can suit a lot a large range of people, including "power users".

I moved from Ubuntu because it wasn't forcing me to learn enough things.

I didn't like it at first, but now I've started liking it. They ship the CD for free, it worked out of the box (5.10, 5.04 had some more problems) (except for this weird sound-card issue on soft reboot, but that's not ubuntu spesific it does that for all distro's [not including *BSD], with and without custom kernels... Maybe I get it working some day ), all the hardware was autodetected and everything, including scanner, the "right" screen resolution etc. When I started the printer dialog, it automaticly found my printer too. It takes some time to boot thou, compared to Arch . For a gnome enviroment and an easy-to-setup distro, I think I can recommend ubuntu. Testing kubuntu too, I didn't like it very much. The control panel for example is weird with the icon menu kinda thing, I prefer the "vanilla" KDE.

Myself I'm starting to wish back to the vanilla KDE 3.5 and Arch/Gentoo/FreeBSD thou, I'll see if I maybe have some spare time tommorow...

I don't care for it, but you shouldn't go on anyone's opinion here. Instead, you should try it for yourself because you might love it.

Asking opinions on any distro is shaky territory on a Linux forum, for the simple fact that every distribution is different, and appeals to different types of people. Ubuntu is one of those that without fail starts a flame war. Locked.
