    Apple on Intel

I was posting in the other Mac thread here, and went to look at the Apple web site... it looks like they are really starting to push the whole Intel chip thing... just look...

This is sad, there's now really only one processor manufacturer, Intel... unless OEMs start preinstalling AMDs it looks like it WILL be the only CPU architecture left...

No, maybe I'm wrong but I thought it was only Emachines that used AMDs...

Yep, I'm getting depressed just thinking about it...

You know, I'm really starting to think that the more popular something gets, the more suckier it gets...

From what i understand, i don't see why mac switched. I heard (not sure if this ir right) that the new intels will have a different architecture than the normal windows pentuims, so it's not like you will be able to have higher chances of windows/mac applicaton compatibility. Maybe the intels are cheaper, allowing mac to sell cheaper prudocts, making it more competitive. Not really sure though.

They're doing it because they're cheaper.

But despite the possible intel monopoly, OSX86 is kind of interesting. Makes me wonder if they'd sell it separately, to give people another OS option on their PCs.

Apple has said numerous times that you will not be able to install OSX on any x86 computer. Also, they're switching because IBM's development of the PPC processor wasn't moving along as fast as Apple wanted. On another note, they are just x86, so "compatability" isn't an issue. I think it's a good switch to be honest. You could feasibly dual (tri) boot OSX for daily use, Windows for games, and Linux for whatever you use it for, all on very nice hardware.

    reasons for the switch:

-PPCs run damn HOT...so no G5s in Notebooks...and watercooled desktops
    -IBM didn't develop fast enough
-IBM couldn't make the chips in large enough numbers
    -PPCs cost too much

AMDs are becoming more and more popular, and they're almost always better than Intel chips, so I wouldn't worry about a monopoly.
