    need mobo/chip suggestions for gaming

    hi all,

i currently have a 1.6 Ghz P4 on an old e-machines mobo and 384 MB of RAM. i also have a cheap $70 graphics card from wal-mart that i put in there when my PNY verto took a dive. the main use for this computer is gaming...and so far it had done an ok job. i bought DOOM 3 yesterday and it actually ran it pretty well (yes there was a lot of slowdown )....but i want it to run full speed. so i would appreciate any suggestions on a mobo-chip combination for gaming. i don't plan on using the cheap gfx card on the system btw. thanks for any help.

The AMD64 loads games pretty quickly. It will run Doom 3 at full settings if you have a decent enough video card and enough RAM. I'd recommend a socket 939 AMD64 and a 256MB video card, preferably something in the Nvidia 6000 or 7000 GT/GTX line.

i just got a Geforce 6600 GT 256mb which runs my Call of Duty 2 very well and the card is not terrible expensive. if you have the cash i would suggest getting the 7800 GT.

    thanks for the reply techiemoe,

i have decided to get an AMD 3700+ , although a dual core is very tempting. now i just have to decide on a mobo. thanks again

for the most band for your buck id go with either 6600GT (128mb, with a 128bit bus you wont get a huge performance boost from 256mb) or a 6800GS

A good mobo for AMD64 IMHO is one based around the nForce-4 Ultra chipset. Check out the ASUS A8N-E or Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-9
