i also tend to use vector when I am using linux, it is pretty fast. Dont use the package manager so cant really say about that...

    I found slapt-get to be very slow. It took ages to get E17...I can't remember if I let it finish or not. That said, pacman is slow at updating the database. Package download in pacman is blazing fast though!

    I've also noticed a speed improvement in pacman if you run pacman-optimize from time to time...
