Suse 10 Oss
I don't want to start a distrowar here or anything, just state a recommendation for SUSE 10. I've actually started using it today, and am really impressed, everything really works out-of-the-box, which I was having probelms with in 9.3. I might even consider buying an actual copy of SUSE 10. I just put on a CD, SUSE detected it, automatically opened up KsCD, and started playing for me. During the install I reinstalled a Winmodem of mine to see how well hardware detection went, it recognized it and prompted me for the install DVD to install corresponding softmodem drivers. It still didn't actually work, but it did actually recognize what it was and tried to install it with the right software. Cheers for SUSE and I'm sure other distros, like Mandriva.
I really think nobody has an excuse at this point for not at lease TRYING Linux, especially with distros at this level around.

I am in full agreement. Suse works out of the box or it did for me as well

I don't think that too many will argue with you there, SuSE is great. I ran suse 10 for a long time but I took it off when my system dumped out on me. I backed my stuff up and replaced it with ubuntu breezy. I do have two internal hdd's that are 80GB each and the other drive runs FreeBSD but I have considered resizing my FBSD partition (is this even possible?) and giving suse another try when 10.1 becomes official. Overall my SuSE 10.0 system ran for a long time, I was really impressed that everything basically worked except for my sound card when I added it and YaST became confused, but it was an easy fix. I had RPM issues here and there (three words: VLC Multimedia Player). Overall I was impressed that it was stable but not using old packages, it uses KDE nicely, and everything just worked for me for the most part.

i like suse 10 too. i think its my favourite (now) because:
-yast
-as is previously said, everything works well out of the box
-given that i don't have an internet connection on my linux box, its the most complete distro of all because a whopping 3.2GB of it is available as a dvd on the front of linux magazines such as linux format. no other distro is as big as this.
-everything is included in KDE and Gnome includes mono. lots of sun(good idea) java packages too instead of those gcj packages that are shipped with a certain other distro.
-the installation disk is the best when it comes to repairing the installation and reconfiguring the MBR.
-includes the latest versions of most packages at the time of release (around october 2005).

When I tried SUSE I couldn't get ndiswrapper to work for me AT ALL. I did like the look and feel of it but I couldn't use it for anything since ndiswrapper didn't work. I tried installing ndiswrapper from a floppy too but it also failed..

I agree, SuSE 10 is down right awesome! After trying Fedora Core 1-4, Mandrake, Mandriva, and CentOS - SuSE is the first distro to actually detect and properly install ALL of my hardware. Excellent distro and one that I am now loyal to.

I'm a SUSE 10.0 user too, and I love it. It works, looks, and feels the best out of all of the distros that I've tried so far. My only complaint is that at times it can get kind of sluggish.
Once I learn a lot more about Linux, I think I might switch to Slackware, but I'm not quite ready to do that yet. SUSE suites my needs just fine for right now.

I must agree with SuSE's awesomeness. I haven't used 10 (hell, I haven't even used 9.3), but 9.2 was absolutely amazing.
It was a simple installation, amazingly stable, and with an easy-to-use package manager. I left it for Gentoo, but it is still my highest recommendation for new users.
Regarding ndiswrapper, I remember having a problem with it as well. I basically had to uninstall the SuSE ndiswrapper, delete some .so file somewhere, and then install ndiswrapper from a .tar.gz. It ended up working, but yeah, the SuSE one didn't work.DISTRO=Arch
