I'm trying to remember how I first came across linux. It was probably back sometime around 1997-1998. I was getting ready to reformat my harddrive and reinstall windows (which was a normal occurence for me about 2-4 times year, I had backup discs and everything I would need for a complete reinstallation all set). I still can't remember exactly, but I bought a couple RedHat CDs, for like $5 a piece.
Anyways, seeing I was reinstalling, I waited and tried to install RedHat...I fumbled through the initial setup (meaning I had to do it a few times until I got it right) and eventually did get it installed. Unfortunately, my video card was funky, and when I got into the GUI the icons on the desktop took up about a quarter of my 15" screen!
Needless to say, I dumped it and went back to windows. Probably about 4 years later, a guy in my class burnt me copies of a newer RedHat, maybe 7.x and I installed that without much of a problem. Same basic hardware though and while I played around a bit with it, didn't get the internet connected to I ditched it again.
Then, a couple years later (or, last year), I pulled up this RH 7.x that I still had, cause my in-laws game me an olde P2 that I could not get to install W2K on...so, I gave it a whirl, and everything was cool, but I still didn't get a warm fuzzy with RH. I ended up installing Suse 9.1 via FTP (a few times actually) and loved it! After a few weeks, I decided to explore other distros and the mystique around Slack drew me in! I'm a Slacker for life now, and have 10.1 on my server at home and 10.2 on a desktop!!!Join the Open Source Revolution. Support GNU/Linux.
