Can Google pickup from where Netscape left off?
The rumor mill on the Internet has been recently working overtime speculating Google's intention of launching their own version of desktop OS. From the recent announcement of "Google Pack" which includes Google Talk, Google Desktop, the Mozilla Firefox Web browser, the Trillian instant-messenger program, RealPlayer, and the Picasa photo-management tool, it seems logical that a Google OS would be the next step for the company. While there are much debate on whether Google OS can emerge as the credible replacement of Windows, Google itself may have set its sight beyond the Window's desktop computing model. Sounds like pure speculation. If we all had £10 (replace with your own currency) for every article like this on the net, we would all retire aged 25 and live in Corsica with Paris Hilton.
Having made such a flippant (and I hope funny) point, Google and MS are currently battling over who will put X amount of out of copyright books online first. There is certainly competition there, and they are obviously keeping each other awake at night.

The Google OS was denied by their reps. They said they use a customized version of Ubuntu for internal purposes only.
fingal...Paris Hilton? Blashphemy!
It's all about Jessica Alba, Abi Titmuss (yes, it is a real name), Jodie Marsh or Scarlett Johansson.
Sorry, I went off topic. If you mention attractive women, I have a tendency to lose focus.

Yea sounds like googles intentions are for a purely internal system. Whatever happend with them and Sun systems? Did they ever get together? I heard a little rumor once about how they were gonna try and get together and create something to kill the bread and butter of MS: their Office suite. Don't know how much truth there is to it, but from what I read, the MS execs were speechless.

Let's face it, money rules the world. The computing community (all of us to one degree or another) have SETTLED for what Microsoft has given us over the years and allowed them to become solidly entrenched as a worldwide OS/software provider (especially in the business arena). At this point, it is going to take alot of money, marketing, and a revolutionary OS to supplant MS. Most people would rather settle than learn a new product and MS is good at taking advantage of this human weakness.
