i sometimes feel deprived. the only problems i ever had with linux were where it wouldn't install on my old computer (it went boom a few weeks later though), when i installed a corrupt suse on my new pc (first experience with linux) and my laptop (suse is the only distro to work). the only problems i have are when i find gaps in my knowledge. maybe i will have a problem or two to fix when i go out and get my new PC.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?
- 02-10-2006 #12Yup... Despite Techiemoe's crappy review I couldn't help installing Ubuntu 5.10 from Linux User and developer (Yeah baby!) and testing it on my box [See what not having anything to do leads you to?]... I have been able to connect to the Internet, play some bongos (isn't that irritating? I mean, the sounds that come with Ubuntu...) and install a couple of programs that I happen to like (xboard and scid) [I had problems with the latter using Fedora Core 4... I tried compiling it from source and all that but couldn't make it work... In Ubuntu scid worked easily! huh!] I have to do some bee-atching about Ubuntu: No EMACS? I can't believe it! This is one of the de facto editors in UNIX and they don't have it already in the CD? The LUD magazine mentions that it comes with gcc which means that I can learn how to program in C... Is that correct? Every time I connect to the Internet I have to go through the same process: enter phone number, configure modem, etc. etc. How can I save those settings and forget about having to go through the steps over and over? Ubuntu's policy regarding root and user accounts was confusing to me... I believe that root ought to have a different password...

when i get bored, i usually fire up the samba service for the hell of it, and do stuff with those files on my samba share. then i compile another kernel.
i like to experiment. mixing n' matching hardware to see what actually works from about 3 systems. i think i met my match when i tried to compile a 2.6.15 kernel for a 486. do ya think it would work after a few attempts? not a chance in hell. its been about 10 different kernels, and none of them work.
hey, you guys were talking about coding in your spare time. which language would be good to start with? i heard that python is a good beginners language, but i dunno.
would it be worth trying to learn python b4 anything else (etc C++, java)?
thanks
