..bit of help

I have a Sun Ultra 10 (440mhz, 1gb RAM, 2x9gb hds, pgx24 onboard graphics) and I need to find a BSD, or maybe linux OS which has support for my framebuffer out of the box (or as soon as) because the screen keeps garbling when I try and install NetBSD on it, any ideas?
Thanks
Bacon

I don't know the answer to your question but i have another question
Why does a 440mhz computer have 1gb of ram? that is totally out of the question, it has no need for half of that, as it isnt good enough to use it

A highly trafficated server has the use for it, and a 440MHz box with that amount of ram would probably run as a desktop a lot better than a 440MHx box with 16MB ram (old harddrives are very slow you know)...

It has 1gb of RAM because it doesnt use a normal processor, it has a ultrasparc processor, 440mhz of these is equal to a lot more in x86 terms because of a higher cache as well as other things.

This isn't exactly an answer to your question specifically, but have you considered using OpenSolaris? If there's one thing that can be said about Sun, it's that their OS usually works very well on their own hardware.

Isn't there a version of OpenSolaris that'll do this? If it's for home use, cant you get a free version of the real McCoy, Sun Solaris?

What about an ftp/http install?
https://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thr...?threadID=5443 - that might provide some insight for you.
Good luck,

Cool, didnt know about the ftp install, but apparently that was only for the x86 version, i got a sparc

Thanks though,
Roxoff, at the minute, on my machine (the sparc) I do run the Real McCoy Solaris, but was wondering if there were a few other OS's I was missing for experimentation.
Doesnt seem that there is many, but solaris is a very good OS, so I guess I will stick to it and play through something emu (i forgot the name...again
)
Thanks

- 02-09-2006 #10Are you thinking of qemu? Or something Solaris related (and thus I will have no clue about).
