    When you say "it doesn't work", what actually happens?

    Also, from Linux, can you please post your /etc/lilo.conf file or the /boot/grub/menu.lst file (only one should exist)?

    Thanks.

    thanks for repling.
    by doesnt work i mean that when i go to boot winxp from the boot menu when i first turn on the comp, the comp goes to do something then just prints rootnoverify(hd0,4) and then a second line, but i cant remember what that is but ends in +1. however if on the boot menu i select winXP and go to the edit bit it contains what the comp prints when i try and boot.

    i have the /boot/grub/menu.lst file but i cant get into it

    i got into the root/grub/menu.lst and it is as follows

    # grub.conf generated by anaconda
    #
    # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
    # NOTICE: You do not have a /boot partition. This means that
    # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /, eg.
    # root (hd1,5)
    # kernel /boot/vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hdb6
    # initrd /boot/initrd-version.img
    #boot=/dev/hda
    default=1
    timeout=5
    splashimage=(hd1,5)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
    hiddenmenu
    title Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.1369_FC4)
    root (hd1,5)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
    initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.img
    title WinXP
    rootnoverify (hd0,4)
    chainloader +1

    According to that, Windows is installed on the 5th partition on the 1st hard drive.

    Is this true? If not, what partition/drive is Windows installed on?

    yes windows is on the 1st hard drive the reason it is the 5th partion is due to trying to partition the hard drive previously to install windows, however the ist hard drive is no longer partition but it still calls it the 5th partition. linux is on the second hard drive i think
