    Xandros 3.02 OCE

While trolling the net, i found the ISO of Xandros 3.02 OCE and figured what the hell,
maybe this will be another 32 bit distro that will install on my AMD64 computer.
I must say Xandros has the most beautiful installer i've seen and also it is
excellent. Installed the bootloader (lilo) to its own partition . When it was finished,
i rebooted into Mepis because i use its grub bootloader as the "main man" on this
computer. Went into the menu.lst file and added a chainloader paragraph for
Xandros. Rebooted into Xandros and then came the moment of truth. Would there
be a root login available? Ah yes, so in i went. So far all i have done is surf but i
am very impressed, especially by the stunning good looks of it.
Here is the link for the iso:
    ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/xandros

    Enjoy !!

I don't understand why this is necessary.
There is no real need to be logging into X as root
And it is a bad idea to login to X as root.

Even in Windows I recommend that people login as limited user for surfing the net.

Maybe he meant that a separate account exists for root?

Xandros is a good distro. I played with it for a while but was turned off by its Xandros networks program to update software... Eventually I moved to Fedora Core 1 then FC4 and now Ubuntu...

It's a cool distro to become acquainted with linux but no more in my opinion...

I personally think Xandros is a very good distro and use it on my laptop. The only thing I don't like is it's rather proprietary software. That being said, it's an excellent distro for those switching from Windows who don't want or have time to get into the 'deeper' aspects of Linux. This is of course their primary target customer I think.

    root login

Been using Linux for 1 year now and have always logged in as root to
get a Windows like experience, no terminal needed. I back up anything i care about to a cd, so if somehow my distro gets lunched by me or anybody else
it only takes a half hour to re-install any one of these distros that i use.
Never had a problem yet, even early on when i didn't know squat.

some distros it doesnt give you the option of creating new users when you install so that you wont use root but i still only use the root login initially to create the users, of course i speak of slackware. but i never once login to X as root. which btw i got my wifes notebook reinstalled after replacing some hardware with slackware and she is using it so far. i even changed the inittab so that she doesnt have to go through command line to login.

synapse13 let me say congratulations but that one day you will come accross a time when running as root will byte you in the motherboard if you know what i mean. you take precautions not because of what will happen but what is a possiblity. its people with your mentality that have caused the zombie PC nation that currently exists when people ignore security. also on day someone will write a virus that will just get any information that you store and report it back somewhere on the net. security goes farther than just not hosing your PC its about securing your information you wouldnt want others to see.

    Hello all!

After trying many distros I've settled with Xandros. I'm fairly new at running a Linux OS, so my experience reflects on that. My biggest problem (so far) is getting connected to d/l updates. I have a notebook with two ways to connect to a network. An Intel Pro 2200BG and a Marvel (I think it is).

I understand that SP2 might possibly address the issue with my wireless connection. However, I can't d/l the updates until I get the connection working. I have been trying to d/l xandros-servicepack2.zip via Torrent, but no one is listed under Seeds.

Does someone have SP2 available for d/l? I have a fast connection that I could d/l the file pretty quickly (depending on the upstream speed of the supplier.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I'm looking forward to reducing my dependency on Windows XP.

    Thanks...

    Too bad

Had to remove Xandros, plugins don't function. No way i am willing to pay for the full
version, don't see any compelling reason.
I don't worry about the NSA listening to my phone calls and i don't worry about
    non-existent Linux viri.

first off how hard is it to use another user account instead of using root for everything. second at one time there were no windows virii either but with no security things changed. thirdly there are acouple of virii for linux that never really got anywhere. So much for non-exsistant!

all i have to say about your lax view of security is you are part of the problem and not part of the solution and laziness breeds bad habits that eventually affect us all so tighten up your security or go back to windows simple as that.
