it seems interesting and will probably allow a larger group of people to install it, but I still preferred the old install way over this way

i always felt a great sense of pride once i finished a gentoo install, no matter how many times i might have tried. it was challenging, but you learned/knew a lot about your system once it was finished

i second that. compiling just about everything from source is what made gentoo Gentoo. and the long hours of installing it .

When they get the installer working I'll give it a go. I'm nowhere near expert enough to start compiling everything.

I thought this was funny. I was just poking around on the livecd as I do with everything.
I brought up the GUI installer, saw there was a "help" option.
So, I clicked on it and was greeted with this.

This is the fscking Welcome screen. Do you really need help here? If so,
please turn back now and install Windows or something.

I am very happy about the new GUI installer, one if my friends has really wanted to try Gentoo, but the text install scared him too much! I don't think this really takes away from Gentoo's customizeability, because all the options are still there!

The idea is great, I agree. The execution however is sorely lacking.

I still prefer the text installer. Once you have installed gentoo a couple of times you can get a base system in under two hours including compile times (obviously excluding such things as kde or gnome--but I can get a system with X and fluxbox or similar from start to finish in about 3 hours on a amd 64 3700+ system).

The experience of doing everything yourself is what makes gentoo -- gentoo. And of course customization and being a source based distro. I do think that a graphical installer is nice because it is yet another choice someone using Gentoo has and choice is power just as there are thousands of different distro's it is good if different distros have different ways to install.
All right, brain. You don't like me and I don't like you, but let's just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer. All New Users Read This!!! If you have a grub problem please look at GRUB MANUAL
