Well as you all know I'm a big drunken paddy so I'll be.....
Well strangely enough this year I won't be getting drunk. I just bought a new house in Wexford and will be moving there on Paddy's Day. Really looking forward to it. Though I may go to Arklow or Wicklow for an hour as my old battalion lead the parades there.
You're from Newfoundland? I heard that a lot of workers in Irish bars in America are actually from Newfoundland because the Newfie accent is more like what americans expect an Irish accent to be like than an Irish accent

Yep. I'm from Newfoundland. My Great Grandfather came from Ireland, exactly where I do not know. I'm sure my father knows as he is big into our family tree. Umm if you get the chance to take a look at archives or something, have a look out for the name Larrissey. Thats how my ancestors spelt my last name lol. Little different from Laracy today but still pronounced the same.
- 03-09-2006 #13I was interested enough to do a quick search! I didn't find much, but I found this which suggests that - going back many many years - one of the principal families in County Mayo was O'Larrissey. Maybe that would be a starting point?

Won't be celebrating it, no1 tends to here.
Only St. Andrews day.
And at that not very much!

To be honest it's really a secular pre-Spring festival. People wear green ... the trees get a bit greener and we all drink too much.
Reminds me of the Czech Republic. Every other day is a saint's day, and every other person there has the same name as one of those saints. So ... ha ha! Every day is a drunken orgy ... Sorry: birthday celebration.
