Adjusting volume
It may sound stupid, but I often wonder about this. When I have to turn up/down the volume, where should I do it?
Manually on the speakers or in the OS?

whichever is easiest for you,personally i mute the sound as i very rarely use games.so sound is an intrusion,except when i'm listening to music

if my hand is closest to the mouse i tweak it there if it's closer to the speakers i tweak it there. what can i say i'm lazy and find i like to crank some songs and turn others softer. so i'm constantly changing it. i listen to music all day on my laptop whiile i work on my desktop at work. i find the one i use most are the buttons on the front of my laptop.

I keep the comp at about 95% and 'pump up' the stereo

i keep the comp at 100% and do the rest on my logitech speakers (shameless plug, but they're great)
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

Probably the best thing for consistent sound quality is to put the computer's mixer levels on about 80% (so you get a strong signal, but not so strong it distorts) and adjust the volume on the speakers.
This has been my experience for many years, and was reinforced by the docs for either ALSA or MythTV or both, I forget which.Stand up and be counted as a Linux user!

Ok, thanks.
By the way, have we stopped counting posts, or is it just mine that doesn't get anywhere?

no increase in post count when you post in the coffee lounge,rules were changed quite a while ago (forgot when, someone will post a link no doubt
)

I have Klipsch 4.1's running on an Audigy 2 Platinum. I set the speaker volume to around 50% and adjust from the computer. When the computer volume is around 50%, there almost seems to be too much noise coming from my room (pictures on the walls start rattling). I like it

I do it this way, though, becuase the speaker that has the volume control is on the other side of the room....all the speakers are in each corner of the room for best sound
