Not sure what Mr Gate's motivation can be in ridiculing this ... Perhaps he's afraid of something?

i also don't see why so many people think this isn't worth it, that the money would be better spent on chalk. one computer connected to the internet can teach a kid alot more than a piece of chalk. i'm learning to program in C++ for free, why cant the internet teach them skills like this?

besides, this project is aimed at countries where the people have food and water, but don't have much education infrastructure and where it would normally be impossible for them to get anything but the most ancient of computer technology if they're lucky.

these laptops aren't being handed out to naked mud covered children that are dieing of polio.

what sama said. it's sheer ignorance to suggest that every 3rd world inhabitant is dying of famine. most likely these laptops will be distributed through schools. i'd like to see DSL put on those things. quality distro all round
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

yeah i can run similar stuff on a 233mhz 64mb laptop, running the fine and mighty DSL. its a quality bit of kit. it doesnt even need a massive disc, a usb pendrive is more than enough for basic word proc/email/web etc

Do you really think this is a downfall for Microsoft? They work in software. Anyone remember what people did with those $300 computers at Wal-mart.
