Old news dude.

It's old news and hasn't even been released yet ... imagine that.
I heard about it a while back - but it's been awhile ... My point of the post is it's getting ready to go public.
As busy as i am ... i might as well be.

the latest news is that gates is mocking it!! i just ask people to show some restraint, save it for their talkbacks

http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1040-6050276.htmlHere's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?
- 03-17-2006 #5Thats an article of note. Firstly, if Bill Gates is attacking it like that, he must be pretty scared.

yet only a coule of paragraphs later in the piece it says 'Gates showed off a new "ultramobile computer" which runs Microsoft Windows on a seven-inch touch screen.' (and it goes on to say it costs 5 to 10 times as much).
C'mon uncle Bill, which of these is true? Is a small screen a good idea, or a bad idea?Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/

i would buy one of those if they were available to the US market.
anyway, i don't see why gates has gotta piss all over an attempt to bring technology to 3rd world countries, and then advertise something those countries could never afford
.
this laptop will probably be enough for them. i hear there are good cli based web browsers that can display images.
they also could probably run off a lower end gui in linux. i think this machine will definitely meet basic communication needs. video chat is not a necessity.

yeah, i find the irony in his statements hilarious too. anyway, about the $100 laptop. i can think of a few good uses for it. for a start, links will be able to run in it. vim for text editing etc. any other ideas? maybe CLI spreadsheet? i want to see this "joke" of a laptop overtake bill's "superphone". so let's see what ideas people can come up with.

You guys need to stop thinking CLI! I can run full X with Firefox, GIMP, Gaim, OOo, etc on a 450MHz P3 and 128MB of RAM taking up 800MB of HD space, so why can't that laptop? With the right set up, I don't see why it can't fit all in RAM.
About that article... for one thing, that article is really hard to follow (I read it earier on linux.org). It's all over the place on it's quote, and I'm sure most of it was put out of contrast. I'm not to say that the Bill Gates wasn't trashing the laptop (I wasn't there to know), but I'm betting the article made it sound a lot worst. You guys should already know how the media works, it's all about shockers!
As for the laptop being sold in 3rd world countries, I doubt it'll ever work. These people don't even have electricity (hence the hand crank), so why the hell are they going to want a laptop? There's far more important things to these people than a computers: Light/Electricity, Food, Clothing, Filtered Water to name a few. This is a 1st world solution trying to be implemented on the 3rd world, it's doomed from the start. In my opinion (and it's only opinion at this point), only 10% of those laptops are going to make it to the people that they were intended for. The rest is going to be lost on a corrupt political/social system. I'm not saying that this guy's intention aren't noble, just that I doubt his solution is going to work. His mind, and money, could have been put in far better solutions that would actually help, and not cause more corruption.
- 03-17-2006 #9And the funny is that Gates was all for it and even gonna donate millions towards it till he found out that linux will be the OS :P

You know what's funny?
Kids in North America sure as hell don't all have laptops
maybe the children in those countries should get some damn chalk and black boards first? Maybe some food and water too? I don't know, just an idea.
